These are all new features that come with SQL Server 2005 and are not available in SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition.

For more information on SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition, visit http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/workgroup/default.mspx.

Will applications designed for SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition be compatible with SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition?

Most applications designed for SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition will be compatible with SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition. However it is important to review the backward compatibility documentation for SQL Server 2005 available at this link:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143232.aspx.

Thoroughly testing your application in a test environment with SQL Server 2005 is recommended before upgrading your existing production application installation to SQL Server 2005.

In addition, if you purchase SQL Server 2005 Workgroup and join it to your SBS 2003 network, you will need to purchase SQL Server 2005 Workgroup CALs to access the server. Upgrading to SBS 2003 R2 Premium is the most cost-effective way to obtain SQL Server 2005 Workgroup technology.

CRM 3.0 - Migration Options for ACT!, GoldMine, and SalesForce.com

During the Fort Worth TS2 Seminar on Tuesday the 16th, Andrea brought up several great questions regarding the migration of customers on other products such as ACT!, Goldmine, and SalesForce.com to CRM v. 3.0.  The concern is that once they sell the customer on the idea of switching to CRM, they don't have a good option to get all of their customer data out of the other programs.  I'd did some research during the day today both internally at Microsoft as well as in the CRM Communities, and other sites to find out what options we had to offer.

There is a Microsoft solution that will do a lot of this work for you (Data Migration Framework), but the updated version isn't out for CRM 3.0 and from what I've heard, the 1.2 version had a lot of room for improvement.  I spoke to one of my collegues regarding the options for migration now since our tools weren't out yet and he didn't hesitate to plug Scribe Software's two products, Scribe Insight and the Scribe adapter for CRM 3.0.  I spent an hour or so on their site reviewing the literature they had available and some customer testimonials that were publicly available.   If it does what they say it does, it should be well worth the money.   I emailed Larry Lentz, our CRM MVP in San Antonio to find out what exposure he's had with the Scribe applications and he said that he hasn't put them to use yet, but Will Hadley from TIP Technology Integration Providers, LLC in Plano, Texas has recently subscribed to them.  I've emailed Will and I'm hoping to chat with him sometime this week to see if I can get some feedback on the tools from a trusted source.

Some people will complain about the price for the tools, but they need to look at it from a different perspective.  If they can cut a 6 week migration in half or beter by using these tools, its well worth it to the customer in the long run because the applicatoin cost is cheaper than the other 80-120 hours of labor that they would incur if they didn't use the tools.  For more information on the applications that Scribe has to offer, check out the datasheets or go to their website at http://www.scribesoft.com

There were other questions around the workflow processes in CRM 3.0 that I will address in another post.

Stay tuned....

Access Denied Errors on Exchange 2003 and SBS 2003 Systems when attempting to send email

There's an issue that going around in SBS User Groups and several other sites regarding "Access Denied" messages on Blackberry devices and other 3rd party applications including Goodlink Wireless, Cisco Unity Unified Messaging and some other custom CDO and MAPI applications that are running on Exchange 2003.

This has issue has been documented in a TechNet article (KB 912918).   The problem occurs after you installed a hotfix on Exchange 2003 that was to resolve the problem with Send As permissions.  (KB 895949).  This fix was intended to keep people who were granted  "Full Mailbox access" permissions from being able to create a new Outlook mailbox profile to use the other user's mailbox as their primary mailbox even though the delegate user is specifically denied "Send As" permissions for the other user's mailbox.

If you are unsure if this hotfix was installed on your server, check for the following versions of the files below to be certain:

File name File version File size Date Time Platform
    Mdbmsg.dll 6.5.7233.51 3,270,144 03-Oct-2005 22:27 x86
    Redir.asp Not Applicable 3,304 04-Jun-2005 01:56 Not Applicable
    Store.exe 6.5.7233.51 5,182,976 06-Oct-2005 17:37 x86

If these files versions are on your system, you will need to take the following actions to get your applications running properly again.  Keep in mind, Registry editing can get complicated so BACKUP your registry before making any changes.

To resolve this issue, grant the following permission to the account under which the application runs:

The Send As permission on the user object in Active Directory

You can grant this permission directly or by using inherited permissions. To grant the Send As permission on all non-administrator accounts in a domain, follow these steps:

    1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers tool.
    2. On the View menu, click Advanced Features if this option is not already enabled.
    3. Right-click the domain object, and then click Properties.
    4. Click the Security tab, and then click Advanced.
    5. Click Add.
    6. In the Name box, type the name of the account under which the application runs, and then click OK.
    7. In the Permission Entry for domainName dialog box, select "User objects" in the Apply onto list.
    8. In the Permissions list, click to select the Send As check box in the Allow column.
    9. Click OK three times to save your changes and to close all the dialog boxes.

To verify that the Send As permission has been successfully granted on a user object, follow these steps:

    1. In the Active Directory Users and Computers tool, right-click a typical non-administrator user account, and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Security tab.
    3. Make sure that the account under which the application runs appears in the Name list. Additionally, make sure that the Send As check box in the Allow column is selected for this account.

To grant the Send As permission for an administrator account, run the following command:

    dsacls "cn=AdminSDHolder,cn=system,dc=domain,dc=example,dc=com" /G "domain\ApplicationAdminAcct:CA;Send As"

In this command line, replace the placeholders as follows:

Replace domain.example.com with the name of your domain.
Replace dc=domain,dc=example,dc=com with the distinguished name of your domain.
Replace domain\ApplicationAdminAcct with the name of the account under which the application runs.

When the KB895949 hotfix is not applied, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (Store.exe) does not require the Send As permission under certain circumstances. This issue was fixed in pre-Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) Store.exe files in Exchange Server 2003 that have a version number of 7233.51 or higher.

Watch Out Google, It's Windows Live!

I just came out of a demonstration of the beta for the future of MSN and WOW, what a difference!  At first glance, the site looks pretty boring and that's by design.  Instead of clogging up your screen with unwanted news and ads, the Windows Live site, is completely customizable by you, the user.

The premise behind it is simple, most of us don't go to just one site all day long to find information, we end up at site after site looking for the information we need to do our jobs each day.  Well, the Windows Live site is designed to streamline your search capabilities, while bringing back to you the information you use on a frequent basis.   Whether you’re at home or work, in the car, or behind your desk, you need assess to information and no body wants to wait for it.   I'll admit, when I need to find something, the first place I think of is going to Google and looking it up, (Yes, I know, this is like biting the hand that feeds me), but I see a lot of hope with the new search engine at www.live.com

Steve Ballmer asked everyone at the Tech Ready general session (Tech Ready is an internal Microsoft Conference for the Technical Sales, Account Managers, and other customer facing geeks that takes place semi annually to allow us to keep up with what's going on with the products as well as a way for us to kick back in the evenings and share war stories with our colleagues from around the world on the good, the bad, and the ugly from the field).  Think of it as the World Wide Partner Conference for the Microsoft Techies, without so much of the Sales Pitch associated with it.  Anyways, back to the point...  Steve was talking about the competition and asked what we used for day to day searching at work and not to anyone's surprise, half the room raised their hands that it was Google, (The other half didn't raise their hands in fear for their jobs).

After the Live.com demonstration and the introduction of an internal tool that does a side by side search between Google and the MSN Live beta site, a lot of us were convinced to give the MSN site a chance.   Now that I've been using it for the past 3 days, it’s winning me over and yes, I haven't done a search on Google.com since Monday!

One of the other perks that really got my attention was the ability from the site that I customized to be able to add or create "gadgets" that really extend the usefulness of the site. My favorite one allowed you to look through current and upcoming TV shows and remotely update my Windows Media Center PC's recording schedule directly through the site!

Additionally, they demonstrated the ability to write your own code to build additional tools. Check out http://www.microsoftgadgets.com to learn how to build your own.    The example they showed us tied into the person’s website and created a slide show of the pictures from that site and displayed it in one of the areas on the live.com screen when she was done.

The idea light went off in my head on how this could be used within a business.  Create a similar gadget that will display the new products or items on sale for a company and display this on the home page their staff.  As it cycles through the photos, they will be aware of what changed without having to search for it on other sites.

It will be interesting on Friday when we wrap up the conference to see the feedback from the rest of the field to find out if they were as impressed with the MSN Live Beta site as I am....     This was just one of many stellar sessions I attended and I will have more to write about regarding Office 12, Exchange 12, Share Point, and Vista as the week goes on.

    Stay tuned....
