Windows Vista Prerelease Hardware Requirements - Are you Vista Capable?

 Windows Vista

For those of you that are trying to find out if your existing systems will install Microsoft Windows Vista or to what level it will run it, the best place to go for that information will be on the new Vista Get Ready website today (Click Here).

The purpose of this site and the information being released prior to launch it to keep from waiting on making that next PC or laptop purchase.  Its understandable that people want to protect their investments and get the most life out of their systems and the guidance information will help them make the right choices.

The Vista Capable designation will be broken into two primary categories, of Vista "Capable" and "Premium Ready".

  • Windows XP-based PCs with the Windows Vista "Capable" logo can run the core experience of Windows Vista such as innovations in finding and organizing information, security, and reliablity.
  • PCs that are designated as Windows Vista Premium Ready can deliver even better Windows Vista experiences, including the Windows Aero user experience.

The Prelaunch hardware requirements will be posted in detail later today, but the main thing to consider in memory and the graphics cards when looking for these systems or considering upgrading systems that were purchased this year.

For systems to run at the Vista "Capable" level you will want at minimum of 512 MB of RAM, an 800 mhz processor and a DirectX 9 capable (WDDM Support recommended).

For the Premium experience, your taking a bigger bump on RAM to 1 GB as well as a 1 GHz requirement on the processor as well as a 128 MB Aero capable Video card.    The best way to ensure your system will do the job is the leverage the Windows Upgrade Advisor Beta to see where your system ranks on overall capability and performance.

If you are a System Builder or an OEM that wants to get their system "logoed" with one of these logos, check out the requirements at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/winlogo/hwrequirements.mspx

Well, I 've gotta run, so I'll post the rest of the details later.

I have just discovered the fix for the much talked about audio driver problem, Right Click the Sound Icon in Task Bar, select Audio Devices, select HD Audio Device, Right click and select "All Users" sound now works!
