Questions and Answers on SBA from Kalamazoo, MI...

Does SBA….

Post an invoice directly to the general ledger?  IF so some people are uncomfortable with sales people being able to touch the GL by creating invoices.

Yes, once it is saved it is posted to Accounts Receivables. In SBA it can, 1) be edited, 2) Processed for payment, 3) Voided, 4) Memorized, 5) create a credit memo, 6) Printed, 7) exported to Word or email (as body). Usually a sales person would do this from an opportunity in BCM, and not be running SBA. More likely, they would convert it to an order and an office manager or someone else would create the invoice. IN SBA the sales person role has NO permission over general ledger transactions (read: they could not directly access the GL) so even if they used SBA they would not even be able to read the GL.

Can SBA be upgraded to full version SQL?  ( I don’t think so but wanted to verify)

No. Must remain in an MSDE instance. Although the instance can be hosted on an SBS 2K3 server.

Is there a provision for reporting Tips as income for tipped employees?

Reporting tips is the employees responsibility as a rule. They would use form 4070 to do so. Employers are required to collect income, FICA, Medicare taxes reported by employees. To track in SBA, a customer could create a sub account in Employee wages.

Does IMF override client setting for safe senders list?

NO.  here is the information from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885152

an excerpt below...

Exchange 2003 provides a set of filtering features, which are also used to reduce UCE. These features are sender, recipient, and connection filtering. Each of these Exchange filters is checked during the SMTP session, when a connecting SMTP server attempts to send e-mail messages to an Exchange server. Intelligent Message Filter is applied after the SMTP session. Any e-mail messages filtered by recipient, sender, or connection filtering are handled individually and do not go through Intelligent Message Filter.

On the client side, Microsoft Office Outlook® 2003 and Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access for Exchange Server 2003 allow users to create a list of safe senders from whom they always want to accept e-mail messages and a list of blocked senders from whom they always want to reject e-mail messages. At the mailbox store, regardless of the SCL rating assigned to the message, Exchange delivers all messages from safe senders to the user's Inbox and all messages from blocked senders to the user's Junk E-mail folder. However, if the e-mail message has been blocked by the gateway threshold, it is not delivered to the user's Inbox because it is never delivered to the mailbox store.

If a user is running an earlier version of Outlook, the safe senders and blocked senders lists are not available. Any message marked as spam is delivered directly to the user's Inbox.

Note
If your users run an earlier version of Outlook, but can use Outlook Web Access 2003, they can configure safe senders and blocked senders lists in Outlook Web Access.

Can WSUS use Full version SQL as it's database

In searching the help files, I found this under Datbase backup...

If you are using a full version of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for your database, which is not installed by WSUS, you can use SQL Server Enterprise manager as an alternative to the Backup Utility. For more information about SQL Server Enterprise Manager, refer to your SQL Server documentation.

So I assume the asnwer is YES.  You can use Full SQL as your database for WSUS.  To find out more, pull down the white paper for Deploying WSUS.

Resolving Conflicts on Teams

Unresolved conflict impacts the ability of a team to work together effectively. One strategy for dealing openly with conflict includes negotiating a resolution--not dictating it. Team members have to be able to compromise, encourage each other to find common ground for new possibilities, and create an environment that values diverse perspectives.

For example, team members may need to agree to disagree on certain issues. If one member bullies the rest of the team into accepting his viewpoint, the rest of the members may resent him and not support the decision. Conversely, bullying a member with a different idea reduces trust and discourages participation. In order for everybody to feel comfortable joining in a discussion, people have to know their ideas will be valued by the group.

Microsoft set to unleash major upgrade, dubbed Cougar, in 2007

By Paula Rooney, CRN
3:00 PM EDT Fri. Aug. 26, 2005
From the August 29, 2005 CRN

Microsoft is preparing a slew of upgrades for Small Business Server including a major upgrade in 2007, code-named Cougar, designed for the Longhorn era.

According to documents viewed by CRN, the Redmond, Wash., software giant intends to provide in the Cougar release stronger desktop integration with the Windows Vista client and Office 12, support for extranet scenarios, and support for line-of-business applications from Microsoft Business Solutions and other application vendors.

Due in 2007 after the Vista client and Longhorn server ship, the Cougar release also will make strides toward reducing the technical skill set needed to deploy, configure, manage and troubleshoot SBS environments, the documents revealed.

Microsoft has summoned its Small Business Advisory Council to its corporate headquarters on Sept. 12 to get feedback on plans for Cougar and to discuss the 2006 release of the R2 edition of Windows Small Business Server, sources told CRN.

One solution provider said he expects SBS 2000 customers to move to R2 but he predicted that existing SBS 2003 customers will use the SP1 update and hold off on the R2 upgrade while they wait for Cougar.

“SBS 2000 really nailed stability, while SBS 2003 really nailed functionality. Cougar can really take another large leap forward in feature set,” said Michael Cocanower, president of ITSynergy, Phoenix. “I am especially excited about the functionality around extranet scenarios in that release, and feel that feature could be the single feature that sells upgrades, similar to what Remote Web Workplace did for SBS 2003.”

Windows SBS 2003 SP1, which shipped in May, includes Exchange SP1, Outlook SP1, SharePoint SP1, Windows XP SP2, and for Premium Edition owners, SQL Server 2000 SP4 and ISA 2004 firewall.

Next year, Microsoft plans a more substantial upgrade of SBS based on the R2 version of Windows Server 2003 that will offer improved patch and update management by including Windows Server Update Services, SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition, and expanded mailbox limits up to 75 Gbytes. In addition, R2 will offer Exchange SP2 and SharePoint SP2. Microsoft also had planned to have automatic configuration of RPC over HTTP in R2, but the company said that feature won't be included in that release.

Another partner that doesn’t deploy SBS to his larger clients but whose firm previously used SBS in-house, said the new features in R2 will likely please many shops.

“We moved off SBS because of its mailbox limits and we needed broader SQL capability, so based on that and [new features] planned for R2 I can see this as a good thing as it lets [the server] move up a bit in the marketplace,” said Bob Tedesco, CTO of Resolute, a Microsoft partner in Bellevue, Wash. “But the biggest thing is security and patch management. Many small target customers do not have IT groups to rely on and need this to be bulletproof and simple to manage.”

One solution provider that dislikes SBS said he will push instead the midmarket server bundle promotion for his SMB customers. “The new midmarket bundle is much better—discounted software and then let the actual customer needs dictate the number of servers needed,” said Mike Healey, president of TENCorp, Needham, Mass.

Hows does IMF Monitoring work?

Chapter 5: Monitoring and Troubleshooting Intelligent Message Filter

You can monitor and troubleshoot issues with Microsoft® Exchange Intelligent Message Filter using Event Viewer and System Monitor.

Using Event Viewer

In Event Viewer, both the Application Log and the System Log contain errors, warnings, and informational events related to the operation of Exchange, the SMTP service, and other applications. To help you identify the cause of Intelligent Message Filter problems, carefully review the data contained in the Application Log and System Log. Intelligent Message Filter writes events to Event Viewer using the source MSExchangeTransport and the category SMTP Protocol.

To view errors, warnings, and informational events in the Application Log

1.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.

2.

In the console tree, click Application Log.

3.

To sort the log alphabetically and quickly locate an entry for an Exchange service, in the details pane, click Source.

4.

To filter the log to list entries for events logged for Intelligent Message Filter, from the View menu, click Filter.

5.

In Application Log Properties, use the Event source list to select MSExchangeTransport.

6.

In the Category list, select SMTP Protocol.

Table 5.1 explains the events that Intelligent Message Filter logs. Unless otherwise noted, all events are logged at the default logging level.

Virtual PC Guest OS Performance Tips Part 3 of 3 --- Boot VPC's in a Minute!!!!

So here’s the trick to boot your VPC’s in a minute, for VPCs you can set them up so that you can close them and when you restart you are resumed to with a save state.  I did have one initial problem with using a variable in the original batch file(%0), but I hard coded the paths I got it working:

  1. Setup your VPC as normal with undo disks disabled.
  2. Shutdown the VPC.
  3. Enable undo disks.
  4. Start the VPC, and get everything to the state you want to begin your demo – apps running etc.
  5. Close the VPC, select to save state and save changes and commit changes to the virtual disk.
  6. Edit the VPC settings, and change the close setting to automatically close without a message and turn off and delete changes.
  7. Create a sub folder under the VPC folder called “Resume”.
  8. Copy the .VMC and the .VSV file from the VPC folder into the “Resume” folder.
  9. Create a batch file in the VPC folder:

Original batch file (I could not get the %0 to work) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318689

@echo off

robocopy "%0\..\Resume" "%0\.." /r:0

start "VPC" /min "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual PC\Virtual PC.exe"

start "Sandbox DC" "%0\..\whatever.vmc"

The one I got to work (just hard coded the paths to the files)

            @echo off

robocopy "C:\Documents and Settings\mhester\My Documents\My Virtual Machines\test\Resume" "C:\Documents and Settings\mhester\My Documents\My Virtual Machines\test" /r:0

start "VPC" /min "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual PC\Virtual PC.exe"

start "London DCex" "C:\Documents and Settings\mhester\My Documents\My Virtual Machines\test\test.vmc"

(Obviously, change whatever.vmc to whatever your VPC is called – and you’ll need robocopy.exe somewhere on your path)

You can download robocopy with the windows resource kit utilities: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&DisplayLang=en

  1. Now you can start your VPC by running the batch file, and it will start in seconds to the point that you created the save state.

So give it a try and let me know what you think!!!!
