  • Is your SBS Environment Vista, Outlook 2007, WSS 3.0, and "DST" Ready?

Over the last couple of months, some new products have been made available and changes to the way we tell time in the U.S. has been updated.

I'm not sure whether or not all of you have seen the following links but I wanted to make sure that your SBS environment is ready for the changes that you'll need to be prepared for.   So here they are compiled for your pleasure.  Have fun :)

If you are planning to install Vista and/or Outlook 2007, take a look at the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926505

You've also heard that there are hundreds of new policy settings in Vista that you won't find on your server.  That's because you have to manage Vista policies from a Vista client.  If you're wondering how to get the new Vista templates up to your server for replication in a multi DC environment, click here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929841/en-us

During our previous TS2 events as well as our launch events, we showed you some of the new enhancements that Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 (WSS 3.0) brings to the table.  We also mentioned that it wasn't going to be a straight forward upgrade in an SBS environment.  Here's what you're going to have to do: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0daafc81-efff-4f5b-a28a-8265f1e99f5b&displaylang=en

With changes to Daylight Savings, you'll need to adjust more than just your alarm clocks :)  Check out http://www.microsoft.com/dst as a starting point or follow the following link for some good SBS related info on DST: http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2007/02/13/extended-daylight-saving-time-sbs-2003-and-you.aspx

  • Miami Launch Event Afterthoughts

Thank you to everyone who attended the Miami launch event!  I hope you enjoyed it and learned a few things that will help you become more successful at positioning Vista, Office 2007, Sharepoint, and Exchange.

I know I had a few questions that we needed to find answers for, so here are some of them:

Although we did have some issues with the Media Center, it is a great tool to digitially record television shows, giving us the ability to even fast forward, pause, and rewind live TV!   However, we may want to archive those TV shows that we record onto a DVD.  How do we do it?  Check out this link:

    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/9ee6cb78-bd7e-4de3-a154-82d40c4289e01033.mspx#ES

On the topic of sharepoint, we wondered how to setup the shared documents section as if it were similar to a network share so that we could transfer a number of files over.  The following link will give you some pointers on how to do so:

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/sharepoint/V2/fsdoclib.mspx

Vista allows us to run applications under the context of the Administrator account, but we may be looking for a way to run applications under an alternate account.  I thought there was a way to do it through the GUI but I couldn't find it (I'm going to do more research on this), but for now, you are still able to use the RUNAS command with steps below:

    =========================

    RUNAS [ [/noprofile | /profile] [/env] [/savecred | /netonly] ]
            /user:<UserName> program

    RUNAS [ [/noprofile | /profile] [/env] [/savecred] ]
            /smartcard [/user:<UserName>] program

    RUNAS /trustlevel:<TrustLevel> program

/noprofile        specifies that the user's profile should not be loaded.
This causes the application to load more quickly, but
can cause some applications to malfunction.
/profile          specifies that the user's profile should be loaded.
                         This is the default.
/env              to use current environment instead of user's.
/netonly          use if the credentials specified are for remote
                         access only.
/savecred         to use credentials previously saved by the user.
This option is not available on Windows Vista Home or Windo
    ws Vista Starter Editions
                         and will be ignored.
/smartcard        use if the credentials are to be supplied from a
                         smartcard.
       /user             <UserName> should be in form USER@DOMAIN or DOMAIN\USER
/showtrustlevels  displays the trust levels that can be used as arguments
                         to /trustlevel.
/trustlevel       <Level> should be one of levels enumerated
                         in /showtrustlevels.
program         command line for EXE.  See below for examples

    Examples:
    > runas /noprofile /user:mymachine\administrator cmd
    > runas /profile /env /user:mydomain\admin "mmc %windir%\system32\dsa.msc"
    > runas /env /user:user@domain.microsoft.com "notepad \"my file.txt\""

NOTE:  Enter user's password only when prompted.
NOTE:  /profile is not compatible with /netonly.
NOTE:  /savecred is not compatible with /smartcard.

  • Virtual Partner Briefing Exchange 2007 Webcasts

Today I had the pleasure of facilitating our monthly TS2 Virtual Partner Briefing with John Hermann (Partner Community Manager) and Vlad Mazek (CEO, Own Web Now).

John spoke about some fantastic opportunities that Microsoft Partners should be looking forward to when it comes to selling Vista, Office 2007, and Exchange 2007!  After John, Vlad gave us some insight into the major benefits and features of Exchange 2007 and how he's seen them affect the SMB space.  I believe that all of the partners that attended walked away with more information that Exchange 2007 than they may have known before, and were armed with some great incentives to make more money!

The VPB recordings should be up shortly and you will be able to find them at www.msreadiness.com by doing a search on "Virtual Partner Briefing"  I will update this entry as soon as I have the final links.

Thank you to all those that attended and please join us in March!

  • Kaboom!

Thank you to all of you who came to our launch event in Fort Lauderdale! If you didn't make it out, you may or may not have heard by now that we had an incident that forced us to cut our presentation short. Around 3 PM, a loud noise was heard (I was taking a bathroom break). I shrugged it off as something that may have fallen down on the floor above. I went back to the conference room and started to present the section on deploying Vista when our event producer let us know that we needed to evacuate the building immediately. A minute later the sirens started and the firetrucks arrived. It appears that there was a gas leak that exploded in the kitchen. I'm happy that we were able to all evacuate the building unharmed, and I believe no one in the kitchen was injured.... In fact, we went into the buildin 15 or 20 minutes later and I started up my presentation again until we decided that we needed to go ahead and call it a day. I hope the presentation on Vista was informative! If you would like the slidedeck from today's presentation, please go to: www.ts2seminars.com
