CRM 4.0 E-mail Router Randomly Pauses

I have noticed in both my own installation and in a client's that the CRM 4.0 e-mail router seems to pause for awhile on a random basis. For instance, I have a workflow rule that sends out an e-mail when a Case is created. I've noticed that the e-mails tend to go out at rather random times. In CRM 3.0, they were sent almost immediately. My client, also a Microsoft Partner, filed a Microsoft Support incident and was told this is a known issue and that a hotfix is in the works. When I learn more, I'll post it.

Where Did My AppMode Go?

When I ran CRM 3.0, I had set the AppMode key in the CRM web.config file to Off. This causes CRM to display in a regular Internet Explorer windows. With it on, CRM strips off all the IE stuff and only displays CRM. Unfortunately with IE7 it also caused an additional windows to open asking you to confirm that you want to close the original window you're starting from. This can be a bit of a hassle for some. Plus, with AppMode off, IE7 can put CRM in its own tab.

When I installed CRM 4.0, my system once again displayed in AppMode. I pretty much put up with it, meaning at some point to go in and edit the web.config to turn it off. Today a newly upgraded CRM 4.0 client requested it be turned back off. No problem, I'll just go in to the web.config and set it to off. Well, search the web.config as I would, I could find no AppMode key.

My good friend Derik Stenerson at Microsoft came to the rescue. Seems they've moved it. Now it can be configured from the CRM web client. Simply go to Settings -> Administration -> System Settings and click on the Customizations tab. At the bottom you will see a section for Application mode. There is a check box for Open Microsoft Dynamics CRM in Application mode. Uncheck this to turn off AppMode.

Thanks, Derik!

CRM 4.0 MUI

One of the new features of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 is the multilingual user interface (MUI). MUI allows individual users to set the language of their choice for using CRM. The CRM deployment must select a base language, like English or German, or whatever, when CRM is installed. Then additional MUI packs can be downloaded and installed to accommodate users more comfortable with other languages, like Spanish or German.

The first step is to download and install the appropriate MUI language pack(s). If you are an English speaker, you can start here. If not, you can still start there and select your appropriate language. Now, if your base language is English and you go to the above link and download the English MUI, CRM will not let your install it because you already have that language. The trick is to look at the download page and select the language you want to download from the Change Language drop down list. Select the language of your choice and click Change (if in English). Once you do, you'd best be able to navigate in that language as the whole pages changes to it. But, if you checked out the layout in your native language before changing the language, you should be able to figure it out. Download the appropriate .msi file for your system architecture and install it on your system.

Once you have installed the various language MUI packs, the Administrator must navigate to Settings/Administration/Languages and select the language you want to make available to your users.image

When you do this, you can specify whether you want the new language to be for the user interface or the help functions. A user may prefer to use the data entry screens in the company language, say English, but be more comfortable reading Help info in French.

Unfortunately the MUI doesn't necessarily know how to translate very thing into every language. For instance if you create a new entity, you will need to provide the appropriate translations.  That's a post for another day.
