How to Setup a Virtual Machine in Windows Server 2008

I was talking to one of my partners that has spent a lot of time with VMWare and I was showing him some of the capabilities Hyper-V had to offer.  When I showed him how easy it was to setup a virtual machine in Hyper-V and he was impressed.  He told me that setting up virtual machines in VMWare was much harder and he wished some of his customers could see how easy it was to setup a virtual machine in Hyper-V.  I’m happy to accommodate my partner, so here is a 10 minute screen cast on setting up a virtual machine.

My videos have moved, please check out

For all of my Hyper-V videos.

I used my Dell Precision 490 as my Hyper-V machine.  The physical machine has an Intel Xeon CPU, 4 GB of RAM, with 4 physical drives.  While the 490 has been discontinued.  It has been a great machine for me, and Dell now has a newer, better model.  If you have any questions or comments about creating Virtual Machines, or questions about Hyper-V, please leave a comment and I’ll follow up as soon as I’m able.

Until next time,

Rob

# re: How to Setup a Virtual Machine in Windows Server 2008

Hi,

I have a Dell Precision 490 machine too. I would like to know what BIOS settings I need to perform before adding role Hyper-V.

Please let me know how to perform hardware-assisted virtualization and hardware-enforced Data Execution Prevention (DEP) BIOS settings.

I created a Screencast on how to configure BIOS to support Hyper-V.  The video includes how I configured my Precision 490.  Check out this entry and let me know if you have any more questions:
