So you want to get started with Hyper-V? Start here! - Part 4

Setting up a Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Cluster

I spent some time in one of our Microsoft Technology Centers and was able to setup a Hyper-V cluster on some pretty impressive hardware.  I had access to a Domain Controller and three servers that were running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition.  They are as follows:

3 Dell R900’s

Quad CPU (each CPU is a quad core)

two of them had 64 GB of RAM, the third one had 128 GB of RAM.  Is that Cool or What??

Access to 1 TB of disk space on an Equalogic SAN carved up into 5 separate LUNs

I spent the whole day with one of our partners doing a deep dive into Hyper-V, clusters and High Availability.  Don’t worry, I recorded a few sessions while I had access to the hardware and I’ll show you a few of the cooler moments.  This session talks about setting up a Hyper-V Cluster, I’ll cover some of the other topics in my next few posts…

My videos have moved, please check out

For all of my Hyper-V videos.

Here’s the Hyper-V Step-by-Step guide that will walk you through setting up your Hyper-V cluster:

My next Hyper-V session will cover placing a Virtual Machine into the cluster.

This session is one part of a whole series of screen casts around Hyper-V, you can go this link to access the whole series.

# So you want to get started with Hyper-V? Start here! – In Summary

By now you’ve seen my multi-part series on Hyper-V.  So far I’ve just talked about the Server 2008

Hello again.

I could really utilize you help in explaining to me how to set up the network connectivity to use for quick and live migration.

- I have a R2 2-node Failover Cluster and 2TB Cluster Shared Volume(s) storage test bed deployed for testing QM and LM.

- Cluster Validation Manager passed green for all test. The exception is yellow for Network configuration and adapters.

-What is puzzling: I can Live Migrate VM's between the nodes if the Virtual Network Adpapters are not attached to VM's I have configured on the Cluster Nodes.

-What are configuration gotcha for creating the QM/LM network?

- Failover Cluster name if RoadTrain

- Failover Cluster IP address is 10.199.0.69

Root Partition:

- There are four network adapter/ports in Cluster Node #1 and Cluster Node #2

- The two on-board LOMs in each cluster node are Broadcom and identical.

-The Dual Port Intel adapter in each cluster node are Intel and identical.

- IP Address' assigned to the LOM's in CN #1 are 10.124.124.26/24 (provides update and internet access) and 10.199.0.206/24 ( is used exclusively for AD/DNS/SCVMM/Hyper-V managment traffic)

- IP Address' assigned to Dual-ports in CN #1 are 13.199.0.206/24 (dedicated to Cluster Node traffic) and 14.199.0.206/24 (configured to allow client and Cluster node traffic)

IP Address' assigned to the LOM's in CN #2 are 10.124.124.27/24 (provides Update/Internet Access) and 10.199.0.207/24 ( used exclusively for AD/DNS/SCVMM/Hyper-V mangment traffic)

- IP Address' assigned to Dual-ports in CN #2 are 13.199.0.207/24 (dedicated to Cluster Node traffic) and 14.199.0.207/24 (configured to allow client and Cluster node traffic)

- Cluster Shared Volume is Dell SAS storage configured with one 1TB Quorum Disk, one 1TB disk default assigned as C:\CSV\.

Hyper-V:

- There is one VM running a Window 2008 R2 Guest O/S on each FC Node.

- The 10.199.0.X LOM in each FC Node is used as the Hyper-V Managment interface to the Root Partition.

- Which interface or interface(s)do you recommend I use to facilitate LM?

- What else do I need to do to LM running VM's connected to Virtual Network Adapters created and assigned to the VM's using Hyper-V Virtual Network Manager on each FC Node?

Thanks MLW
