Google Vs Windows Live
Wednesday, February 27, 2008 12:13 AM

The latest news on the street is that Google's paid click growth has hit a wall. What does that mean? It means that merchants who pay Google to buy adwords aren't spending as much to advertise with Google.

Here's a great video that explains the scenario.

This reminded me of a conversation I had a couple of months ago with someone on the Windows Live team. Yeah, that great site, www.live.com that serves all your internet search needs. This product manager told me that Windows Live had a better "conversion rate" than Google; meaning that if you advertised on Live Search, you were more likely to see the customer click the link, and and and, then buy the product you're selling. That ladies and gentlemen is called conversion.

btw: if you haven't tried Live Search lately, give it a shot. You might just be surprised.

Windows Vista Ultimate in the Action Pack
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 11:25 AM

Some of you may know about this, but those that don't, there's some good news. A future Action Pack update (mid-March) will include Microsoft Windows Vista SP1.

Yes, I know. It took us a while, but thanks to the great feedback (and some brickbats) we received from our Partners, we took this issue to MSPP and got it fixed.

Read more about it here.

Encryption is so Yesterday!
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 12:58 AM

Check out this article at the NYT. Now if you've wondered how to crack encryption, you've probably thought that you needed a hunky server running some complex algorithm. Like the stuff they have at NSA headquarters.

Actually, its very cost effective. Per the research done at Princeton, all you need is a can of air to chill the DRAM chip and viola you can extract info. I sent an email to a buddy that works at MSR to get his thoughts on the matter. But, in essence, this is a hardware issue. =P

Read the article, its so easy that even you can do it at home (or so it sounds.)

Microsoft Ink!
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 12:31 AM

A partner sent me this picture. I don't know if this is his picture or if he got it from somewhere on the Internet; I thought it was a great compliment to Microsoft and the products we build.

My cordial thanks to every partner who supports and sells our products. Though, not everyone may sport a tattoo, I'm sure we all have a scar here and there we can talk about. =P

Really, I mean it, you guys - Microsoft Partners are AWESOME!

LA LA LA Launch
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 12:23 AM

If you registered for it, you probably know; the official launch for Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 is this Wednesday (Feb 27) in Los Angeles. All the company hot-shots plan to be there (including Steve Ballmer.)

The sad news is; if you're one of those last minute people, hard luck, the place is packed full. So why am I rubbing it in? Cause yours truly has an all access VIP pass, if you will, and I plan to bring back some pictures and lots of stories for you to read about. So stay tuned.

And... If you have the time to attend a launch event in the future, go to the launch website and register. Don't wait, cause someone might move your cheese.

What's this buzz about Windows Server 2008 SP1
Monday, February 25, 2008 11:58 PM

about screenYou may have already seen this (or will when you install Windows Server 2008) and wonder why does the build read as Service Pack 1. I have a bunch of emails in my inbox asking the same question and quite honestly, it seemed like a prank until I heard it from the man himself.

Check out Iain McDonald's blog and you'll get the run down of why Microsoft chose this particular nomenclature. On the bright side, you dont have to wait for SP1, we just gave it to ya. So shouldn't it be easier to sell WS2008 since customers always wait for service packs before mass adoption?

See we be smart like that! =D

Comic lovers delight: IT Heroes is here!
Monday, February 25, 2008 11:40 PM

Week1_Day6_Full

So check this out. Microsoft's got a DC comic writer to come up with a comic strip highlighting some IT heroes out to fight a deadly rootkit. It a little cheesy, but very addictive. I keep checking the site for updates. Just something to entertain all you IT heroes out there, when you're relaxing over a donut and coffee during break time.

Virtualization Made Simple
Tuesday, February 05, 2008 11:37 PM

With everyone going hyper about the things that hyper-v can do, it makes sense to talk more about virtualization. Atleast the feeling that I get from partners is that figuring out how virtualization will help customers and the kind of customers to pitch virtualization to are the biggest gray areas, even with all the information and buzz available on the subject.

I found some resources (courtesy: ronaldg) that will help clarify the scenarios in which virtualization can really be beneficial to a customer. As regards to the size of the customer, I dont think that this should be a size segmented offering. A small business with WS2008 that needs to provide access to applications from a terminal services gateway could be just as good a candidate as a large firm that has lots of unused disk space and processing power and several operating systems that need to be managed. I guess we'll find out when the products finally in market and people begin using it.

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager
The goal of this cookbook is to provide the steps and guidance necessary for you to successfully install and configure Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 and System Center Virtual Machine Manager. You may then create and manage virtual machines, and perform P2V migration.

Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007, Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 Service Pack 1, and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager

This cookbook also includes the steps necessary to install DPM and to back up a running virtual machine, as well as information about monitoring and reporting using DPM.

Windows Server 2008 RC0 Available
Tuesday, February 05, 2008 10:23 PM

image I just came back from the gym and my mailbox, as always, is full of email. True to form, I roll up my sleeves and try to answer as many of the 597 items in my inbox. Usually after I've replied or categorized my email, I move them off to other folders.

Many emails are asking where can folks get their hands on Windows Server 2008. So.... if you haven't received your Action Pack update with the beta yet, go to this site and download the 30 day trial version. When you do get your update, use the product key to activate that will allow you to evaluate the copy until June, 2008.

Oh yes, if you have any questions on Cougar or Centro, know that my lips are sealed and hands are tied. But there's nothing that a shot of Bacardi 151 cant get out of even the most tight lipped techie. So buy me a drink, and who knows what kind of beans I'll spill.
